Summer Service Checklist: How To Ready Your Car For A Road Trip

Gearing up for a summer road trip? If so, don't forget to give your car a quick checkup! Here is our handy checklist of items to ensure your ride is in good working order before hitting the open road. From checking fluid levels to ensuring proper tire inflation, we've got you covered. So put on your sunglasses and sunscreen and get ready for some fun!

1) Test the Battery -

The battery is essential to starting your car, so it's good practice to test it for optimal charge before a long trip. Test the battery using a voltmeter or take it to a qualified mechanic. A loose battery connection results in decreased electrical power and may cause your engine to stall.

2) Check Your Tire Pressure -

Remember to inflate all tires, including your spare, to the proper pressure. You can find this information in your car's owner's manual or on a sticker inside the driver's door.

Under-inflated tires wear out faster, but they can also lead to blowouts. Be sure to check your tire pressure at least once a month. Also, don't forget to check tire tread levels before heading out.

In addition to checking the pressure, you should also inspect your tires for signs of wear and tear. Look for cracks, bald spots, or objects embedded in the tread. If you see any damage, replace or repair the tire immediately.

3) Check Your Fluids -

All cars need oil, coolant, and washer fluid. Before heading out on a road trip, these liquids should be at the proper levels. Checking your fluids is easy to do and only takes a few minutes.

Before hitting the road, open the hood and locate the dipsticks. Pull out the dipstick, cleaning it with a rag. Reinsert and pull out the dipstick again to check oil levels. The oil should be at the full line; if not, add more until it reaches that mark.

Checking your coolant level is also essential. Locate the coolant reservoir under the hood and remove the cap. Check to see that the fluid is at or above the full line. If it's not, add more until it reaches that level.

4) Test the Lights - All of Them

Before driving off, test all of your car's lights to ensure working order. This includes the headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals. Inspect the electrical wiring to avoid malfunction.

Neglecting vehicle light maintenance can have severe consequences on the road.
